Once more I find myself allowed to be alone with my thoughts...and playing Massive Attack. MA on its own is not a bad thing, not by any stretch. However, me being in the mood I'm in and listening to MA...yeah...not a good combo...

For those that didn't read the previous post, MasQ is no more. For most, this is not news. And for a lot of folks in the know, I have had quite a love/hate with the event. With what exactly, I won't get into here. However, now that it's gone, there is a void. Like part of me is dead or something. It's hard to put it into exact concrete terms...but "void" is the best thing I can think of. I feel like the opportunity to play industrial for the masses is now gone. I'm sure someone out there will think "Well, why don't you start your own night?"

In a perfect world, that would be an option. However, this is far from a perfect world. I gave that a go last year, with all the well wishes and promises of support. Support which I did not get...many people that said they'd be there were nowhere to be found. For those that were, they have my eternal gratitude. The number of listeners of my industrial radio show have been steadily dwindling (yes I know, they haven't been on in a while...this was before the hiatus) with a couple of exceptions...but I'm feeling the industrial scene here in the city is dead...completely dead. And with its demise comes a feeling of being washed-up...like I'm no longer needed...like it's time to hang up the phones...

And yes, I know I've spoken of this before. However, with no prospective gigs coming up anytime soon, this may very well be it. Like this was my last hurrah. Who knows...maybe it should be.

Maybe it's the time of the year...maybe it's because I need to eat...or maybe everything I'm feeling right now is exactly how things are. Like the people that say they're my friends really don't want anything to do with me. Like I'm really alone. Like it wouldn't matter much if I just slipped away and stayed there. The way I'm feeling right now, all of those things are as real as they can be.

And with that, the words that could come close to describing how I'm feeling right now begin to fade. Like I don't even care about finishing this post. In a way, I don't...I guess whatever is ailing me tonight had taken hold fully. And as the opening strands of "Dissolved Girl" come over the speakers I will end this.

Update 11/17/11

Well...Hal-Con has come and gone...and what an event! I had SO much fun spinning for the geeky/nerdy masses...hopefully I'll get the chance to do it again next year!

Next up for me is Have Yourself A Gothic Little Christmas, which is happening Dec 3 & 4 at the Halifax Forum, same location as last year. Shouuld prove to be a lot of fun. Again, I'm not spinning there, but I'm helping out selling tickets at the door...so feel free to stop by, chat, and all that fun stuff :D

And something that I have been morbidly waiting for has happened: MasQ is no more. Why is it gone? The promoter decided it had run its course and it was time to end it. I will miss spinning industrial live for the masses at MasQ, and hopefully something will emerge to fill the void.

The radio shows will return next week. There's been a lot going on over the last little while, with side gigs here and there (my work xmas party this weekend, the Belindance hafla next weekend, Gothic Little Xmas the next)...but I want to get back on some semblance of a normal schedule before year's end.

That's all for now. More when it happens...

Recap, update, and a short rant...

Judging from the title of this post...yeah...should be interesting...not to mention listening to FSOL, Photek & deadmau5 while writing it...

First off...the weekend from hell. Three gigs...three nights. I survived...barely.

GIG1: When Darkness Falls (Oct 29th, Citadel Halifax)
Didn't quite go as well as the folks who put it on were hoping. We ended the night early. It was fun, but again the turnout was kinda disappointing.

GIG 2: Time Traveler's Ball (Oct 30th, Lord Nelson Hotel)
Oh man...what a night! Amazing turnout...amazing energy in the room...the whole thing was awesome! Great costumes...the crowd ate up the tunes, lotsa dancing...definitely the highlight of the weekend. There was one small thing about it which was a little of a downer...but I'll be getting into that in the "short rant" section of the post.

GIG 3: MasQ - Halloween Event (Oct 31st, Tribeca)
Honestly, to me, it was a bigger turnout than I was expecting, considering it was a Monday night. I like the Tribeca space...it has an industrial feel to it, which helps with the energy for the event. Always a pleasure to work with DJ Rune.

And as soon as I walked in the door from that event, I got a nasty-ass cold. Home for three days straight. Wasn't fun...still recovering. Much better now, but still coughing a bit. Prolly gonna be doing that for the next week or so.

Now that that's over with...there's the stuff coming up:

Hal-Con 2011 (Nov 12-13, WTCC, Halifax)
Once again, I'm spinning at the ball for the convention...and like last year, I can't wait! Of course there's going to be a VERY mixed bag of music for everyone...sci-fi, retro, industrial, Asian...you name it! If you haven't already been doing so, I have a forum topic on my Facebook fan page set aside for requests...and seeing as it's coming up REALLY soon, get them in quick!!

Have Yourself A Gothic Little Christmas (Dec 3 - 4, Halifax Forum - Maritime Hall)
I'm not exactly spinning at this event, but I am going to be at the door helping out with admission both days, and providing some Christmas & celtic music for the event. As far as I know, there might be a dance-off like there was last year...in which case, the music will be slightly more upbeat for that :) You're more than welcome to come over & say hi while I'm there :)

As far as next year...well, I'm hoping to be spinning for Animaritime 2012, as well as a few other events in the works. Time will tell.

I apologize for the sporadic schedule of the radio shows. I was hoping to start doing the Dark Industry shows like a regular podcast...yeah, that went well, didn't it? Anyway...I'm hoping to have everything straightened out for my 80s show on Monday night...no Dark Industry show this Thursday, as I'm still working on my secret project for Hal-Con...but once that week's over, it's business as usual for the radio shows...hopefully...

And now we come to the short rant section of the post...this isn't really an angry rant...just something that's been kinda bugging me.

Remember way back in the post when I mentioned something happened at the Time Traveler's Ball that was a bit of a downer?

Well...a few days after the event, I got an email stating someone had written to them about their disappointment that I hadn't played their request(s) at the ball...and wanted to know what it was all about.

First off, I love playing requests for people. They get a thrill out of hearing their song being played, I like making people happy...it's one of the reasons I do this. But I can't do it each and every time. There was a sign I saw on a website a fellow colleague directed me to which had different notes sent to DJs and signs different DJs had posted near their setups. One really caught my attention, and it kinda defines my thoughts regarding requests:

"I'm a DJ, not a jukebox."

As much as I love playing requests, there are several reasons why I haven't/won't play a request. The disc could be scratched, the file could be corrupted, or I just don't have the song in my library. There's also a very big reason, one that is very important for me: if it ruins the mood, it will either get played later, or not at all.

One of the primary jobs of a DJ is to create a mood for everybody. The mood generally shifts over the course of the night, as it should, as people in general are fluid, and a good DJ "goes with the flow," as it were. If someone requests a song, and it goes with the flow of everything up to that point, it will most certainly get played. If, however, someone comes up with a song that doesn't fit, again it'll either get pushed to a part of the flow that best suits the request...or it doesn't get played at all. As cool as it is to hear your request played, you gotta remember that there's a whole crowd of people in the room that might not like the song. And I have to make a decision on how the crowd will react to it. One of the worst things for a DJ is to lay down a track and have the floor clear...and if I think that song you've requested will do just that, it might not get heard. It's nothing personal...it's my job.

And I have to say this here and now: if you run up to me with an iPod or phone or other mp3 player, and tell me you want to hear a song and you have it on your player...there's a good chance I won't be hooking your player to my rig. Again, it's nothing personal...but the tracks I play for the crowd that are digital in nature are generally at the highest bitrate with which an mp3 can be encoded (I prefer using CDs, but I already have like five books of CDs I lug around with me...a thumb drive or ext. HDD is a LOT easier to carry!). Not everyone has the same standards I have regarding digital music. There's a good chance that while you're loving the track in your player, it'll come out sounding crappy coming over the sound system because of the encoding...in which case, I won't play it. Call me a snob if you like, but quality is everything when you're an audiophile like me. If I had my way, everything would be in .FLAC format...but I just don't have the room.

These are things to keep in mind when making requests at events like the ball, or at Hal-Con. Something I covered in the opening forum post for the request thread was about theme songs from movies, TV shows, anime, or game theme songs. If the song has a good beat, and and you can dance to it, then it'll be played. If it's a theme that I have a remix, or variation of (like "Doctorin' The Tardis" by the Timelords, when people ask me to play the Doctor Who theme), that will get played. If you ask me to play a theme song that is symphonic in nature, it won't get played. Even if you find some heavy metal cover of it on YouTube...it won't get played. And even if I like it, which happens quite often, I have to consider everyone else in that room. As cool as it is to hear a piece of symphonic music from your favorite game played over a sound system with tons of bass...you might be the only one that likes it...in which case, it clears the floor. And that's bad.

Again, none of this is directed at any one person. None of this is to be taken personally. This is my job as a DJ to have the final word on what gets played during a set.

And with that, I go to bed...see you all at Hal-Con on Saturday night!!

Update 10/04/2011

Well...a lot of stuff has been going on as of late...here's the way things look right now:

There will be no radio show on Thursday, as there will be significant construction here in the studio (translation: renos in the computer room!). Also, as of the beginning of this month, Dark Industry will become a monthly show. As the listener numbers aren't quite as high as they are for Totally 80s, I decided this would be the best thing for the industrial show. The show will become more of a podcast than a live radio show. This will enable it to be re-broadcast multiple times on the air, in case people missed it the first time around.

And speaking of Dark Industry, I want to again give my thanks to the folks on the Industrial Nations Facebook group for lending such wonderful support to last Thursday's show, and to the artists who sent in their tracks! What I heard on the show was amazing, and your music definitely held its own up against the more established artists...keep up the great work!

And then there's the live shows coming up...and there are quite a few...

OCTOBER 29: When Darkness Falls - Citadel Hotel Halifax (all-ages)
This is a Halloween event in conjunction with Darkside Expo, happening in 2012. Proceeds for the event will go to Spay Day Nova Scotia.
For more information on this event, go HERE.

OCTOBER 30: The Time Traveler's Ball - Lord Nelson Hotel (all-ages)
This is another Halloween event, a joint venture between the Hal-Con Sci-Fi / Fantasy Association and the Jules Verne Phantastical Society.  For more information on this event, go HERE.

OCTOBER 31 - TBA (as soon as I know, you'll know ^_^ )

NOVEMBER 12-13 - Hal-Con 2011 - World Trade & Convention Centre (WTCC), Halifax
Last year's con was a great success, and this year's event promises to be even better! For all the information on this event, visit the official convention site HERE.

That's what's coming up in the next few weeks. Beyond that, there's a few things in 2012 that may have announcements coming soon. I'll let you know :)

On the subject of fanboys & forums…

This is something that’s been picking away at me for a long time now…and it’s one of the reasons why I don’t participate in forums much anymore…

Now I do know not all fans, geeks & nerds fall into the category I’m about to go off on…I consider myself quite the geek. And that’s not a bad thing.

What I’m talking about is the person that decides something is crap or lame after having only seen a screenshot of a movie, or conceptual art, or a very brief video clip. The type that casts a summary judgement on something without having seen the full version of whatever it is they’re criticizing. Chances are, when that movie or comic is released, they’re in line to get it, or see it. But they won’t admit it to anyone.

I see these kinds of people on all sorts of forums, none so venomous as on sci-fi or comic forums…and, recently, on Facebook.

On occasion, I visit Blastr, the board for the SyFy network. Something will catch my attention, and I’ll read the article, no pre-conceived notions installed. And then I’ll scroll down to the comments, and opinion of fanboys is reaffirmed. Even a rumour about an upcoming project has these trolls popping up, calling it crap, lame, or some other derogatory term…but it’s the same: condemning it before seeing the actual product. I read all the comments about the reboot for Star Trek (which I loved, BTW…been watching Trek since I was five!), the new Captain America movie (also loved!)…and just recently the new incarnation of Spider-Man.

No…not the movie reboot coming next year (though I’ve read my fair share of troll posts on that!).

I mean the new Ultimate Spider-Man in the comics. Not knowing everything about the new storyline, I can’t comment on how well/badly written it was, but I do know that in the Ultimate timeline, Peter Parker is now dead, and a new person has taken up the mantle of ol’ Webhead.

His name is Miles Morales. Half-African-American, half-Hispanic. And possibly gay, though that hasn’t been confirmed as of yet.

Just from what I’ve read on the Marvel FB group, the reaction is very divided. Some, like me, look at this as the writers wanting to shake things up…which I don’t see as a bad thing. Some look at this as a potentially exciting change.

Others, however, cannot/will not accept change, as is common with most fanboys. Don’t touch THEIR heroes, THEIR stories. Ever. I can see some people saying that Peter Parker is the only true Spider-Man, just like some people say that Sean Connery was the only true James Bond. I get that.

But what’s really shocked me is the level or racism, bigotry and prejudice over this new Spider-Man. That having him as a “half-breed” and not even white is destroying the legend. That it’s going to end ol’ Webhead’s popularity. That Marvel is pissing everything down their collective leg.

Seriously? Having an inter-racial, possibly gay Spider-Man is going to destroy everything? Really? Give me a break…

I have two words for these people: grow up. Stop acting like children on a kindergarten playground and get with the times.

Y’know…I finally get what that whole thing was about with Shatner on SNL telling the fanboys to get a life…because I find myself echoing those same sentiments toward these people as well…

Animaritime 2011

Last night I took part in what I feel is the most fun I've ever had as a solo DJ: spinning at Animaritime 2011.

Just to give a little back story: back in May, I participated in an event in Halifax called Jammin' For Japan, which was a fundraiser to raise money for the relief efforts for Japan after the earthquake/tsunami disaster. Along with DJ Megalon, we played some great jpop/kpop tracks for a very responsive crowd...and it was an absolute blast!

Jump ahead a little...

I get an email from one of the organizers of Animaritime, which is an anime/manga convention in Moncton, New Brunswick. The original DJ they had for their event was unable to perform, and they needed a replacement. They got hold of the organizer of Jammin' For Japan to see if they knew anyone that might be able to fill in...and my name popped up, hence the aforementioned email. I was absolutely blown away that they would want me to play! Details were hammered out, arrangements made, travel finalized, all that fun stuff...and I was off to Moncton yesterday morning.

I admit I didn't take any pics at the con...I didn't need to, really...all you have to do is go to the Animaritime group on Facebook, and there are an absolute plethora of pictures there! Some fantastic costumes, and some great people...the con alone was a lot of fun!

Now...as for the dance...

The floor was full the ENTIRE night! The crowd loved the tracks I laid down for them, and I was having a wonderful time playing for them. Near the end of the two-hour set, I announced that the con was closing down at midnight, and they had like six minutes left...there were a lot of screams for the music, lots of cheering, a few "we love you"'s scattered about...which, I have to say, I'm SO not used to...it was amazing! I laid down the last track, and as it was ending, the energy was incredible! The response made me absolutely speechless...there are no words to describe exactly how I felt at that moment. Even to say I was blown away doesn't do it justice. Even after I got back to the hotel room, I couldn't sleep for a good while...I could have gone for a lot longer, that's for sure...

I want to give a sincere, heartfelt thank-you to the staff of Animaritime for putting on a wonderful convention, for making me feel like an actual celebrity (something else I'm SO not used to!), and to everyone that attended the dance...the response I got from you all is something I will never forget, and it's one of the most important reasons I continue to do what I do. Here's hoping I'll be back next year, and we can do it all over again!!

Domo arigato gozaimasu!!  ^_^

Branching out...

For the past little while, I've been thinking about branching out, experimenting, spinning other styles of music. Just recently, I was invited to spin at a local event called "Dubalicious Wednesdays," which is hosted by Full Circle Events. As the name of the event might suggest, it's primarily a dubstep event. Occasionally they have DJs that spin jungle/drum & bass, but for the most part, it's dubstep.

I did a 90-minute set...and it was the most fun I've had in a good long while. And I hope to do it again very soon.

Does this mean I may be giving up EBM/industrial for spinning dubstep? No. EBM/industrial is my first love when it comes to spinning music. But I think it's healthy for any DJ to step outside his/her comfort zone once in a while, and give it a go. I keep an open mind about different styles of electronic music...EBM, industrial, rhythmic noise, trance, breakbeat, dubstep, drum & bass, electro house...

Below is a link to my newest DJ set on Mixcloud. Entitled "F1L7H," this is my first DJ set delving into what is referred to as "dirty," "grimey," or "filthy" dubstep...because, as it turns out, it doesn't matter what style of music I pick...it's all dark and gritty :) I invite you to give it a listen, and give your thoughts on it. I always welcome opinions :)

...the lead-up to the end...

I've had some time to sit and think about things as of late. And listening to Massive Attack. As we all know, this isn't a good combination...

Thinking back to October of last year, and my failed attempt at putting together a new night for industrial music in Halifax, and thinking about everything that's happened up until now...all the events I've been playing for...it's becoming more and more clear to me that people are tired of hearing me.

The majority of the support I had hoped to have for "Industry" was non-existent...the attendance for MasQ has been dropping off...my feeble attempts to compete in a battle of the DJs event TWICE in a row had little support at all...both events I've spun for in conjunction with Darkside Expo had little support from people...my hopes for playing at two big events have all fallen through...

Maybe it really is finally time to step down, hang up the headphones, and give up...

It's not a matter of being too old for this, as was demonstrated some time ago...but maybe no one wants to hear me play anymore. I've over-stayed my welcome as a DJ in Halifax.

I have a few events I have agreed to play for, and I will stand by that. Beyond that...I don't know...but it's my belief that I won't really be missed. It was inevitable.

"So what do you do?"

Many times I get asked what I do for a job. For the most part, I'm a temp. But people ask me what I do, aside from being a temp.

As many of you will guess, I tell people I'm a DJ. However...I've started thinking about what it is I do. The more I think about it, "DJ" doesn't quite cover it. It's more of a matter of being an expert in social science.

Follow along with me in your bo....umm...heh...just follow the train of thought here...there might be a quiz later.

DJs are, by our very nature, people watchers. We observe and record, mentally, the behaviour patterns in people in large crowds. Much like someone that goes to a mall food court and watches everyone around them, we do very much the same thing. We can look at the crowd, and immediately class people into certain categories. Scene kids, hardcore, poseurs, n00bs...even if we don't give consciously names or labels to them, we all do it. It's part of the science. Yes, in some cases, we are perpetuating the stereotypes we loathe...but we all do it.

The other part of this science is within the music itself. More specifically, the effect it has upon the crowd, and said categorized denizens. We play music we think the crowd will enjoy. This is the basis of our profession: mood creation and/or manipulation. Our job is to create a mood for our "lab rats" to experience. We also have the power to change that mood at a whim, sometimes for the sole reason to see what the crowd will do. This, in turn, changes the behaviour of the subjects. As we change the mood, we take note of the style of music we played to change that behaviour, and we can either maintain that mood, or shift it ever so slightly.

This does, in a sense, make us scientists. We conduct aural experiments on a large test subject group, and mentally record the results, remembering the effect a certain song or beat had on the test group, knowing the general effect that will have on the crowd. And depending on the crowd, you may end up with a different reaction to the previous playlist, thus giving you a whole new set of results. Even if you change the mood up, causing a good number of the test group to leave the floor, you have reached a result. Most will go back to what they know will work to gain their attention once more, and bring them back to the floor, letting you start the experiment anew.

For some of you, this might not come as a surprise at all. For me, this became a revelation one night while spinning an event. And much like the realization that becoming a DJ will change forever how you listen to music, putting everything into scientific terms changes how I look at what it is I do.

So for the DJs that might be reading this...the next time someone asks what you do, telling them you're a social scientist might not be too far from the truth...

Good luck on your experiments.

A different direction...

Before you look too far into the title of this post...I'm not giving up on my love for EBM & industrial...

Tonight was a foray into a new style of music for me: electro house. I've been a fan of this particular style of electronic music for a while without really knowing the particular genre classification for it. And there are times when I want to hear heavy beats but not distorted ones.

It wasn't a gig...but I recorded a new DJ mix tonight, and I gotta say it turned out better than I had expected...and I decided I would share it with everyone...maybe let me know if you like it :)

Here's the tracklisting:
Kaskade & deadmau5 - More For Me (Extended Remix)
DJ Sergey Stress - Eternal Life (Original Mix)
Nikita Ukoloff - Techno Parade (Original Mix)
Kid Kawaii vs Legend B - Lost In Love 2010 (Sebo Reed Remix)

Aaren San - Apes From Space (Dirtyloud Remix)
Wolfgang Gartner - Illmerica (Extended Mix)
Felguk - All Night Long

Recent stuff...

Since most people read this blog from Facebook, it might not affect you, but consider this my first rant of 2011...

In the past 24 hours, I've received TWO DCMA takedown notices for my shows. I've been doing this for a good number of years now, and have been recording my shows, and then putting said shows up for download. For those that have never downloaded one of the radio shows I do, they're non-stop programs, with me talking on the mic for a bit every three or four tracks. And all the songs are blended together, so you couldn't pull a specific track out of the mix. No different than listening to something on the traditional FM radio.

Both notices were for the most recent Totally 80s shows. This has NEVER happened to me before. Ever. Which begs the question, "what changed to make my programs get noticed by the enforcers of the DCMA?"

The only thing I can surmise is that it has something to do with me posting links on a blog run by the almighty Google...because this never happened on my other blog. Which means one of two things: either I stop posting the show downloads on this blog...or go back to the old one, hosted elsewhere, and continue on as before.

It baffles me why, suddenly, the show recordings are worthy of the takedown notices, when they obviously never caused a ruckus before. I begin to wonder if maybe it's Google, or maybe someone who has a grudge or something and has decided to do this out of spite and malice. I'm not sure...but it will not stop me from recording the shows and posting them for download.

At one point, I had thought about the idea of maybe selling CDs of my DJ mixes at events, just to make a few bucks, and I consulted someone at Metropolis regarding this. They confirmed what I had thought about the idea: I couldn't sell the mixes because I didn't own the rights to the music...but I could give them away as promotional material. Which is what I've been doing with the radio shows...they're available, free of charge, as I am unauthorized to sell the music because I don't own the rights to do so.

On top of that, when I went to see where I could make inquiries as to why this was happening, there's NO ONE that I can contact...they have phone numbers and snail mail addresses...and that's it! No way to state your case at all aside from taking a counter-notice out against the original takedown notice, which seems like more trouble than it's worth.

I do not run an illegal download blog. Being on various promotional lists for music, it's veritable SUICIDE for me to do so. SO what the hell...why is this happening now??!?

I know no one reading this would have any answers for me...I'm just vocalizing my frustrations...which hasn't helped my mood at all, as you can imagine...

Nothing is ever constant...

If there's one constant in my life, it's that nothing is constant...or rather, few things are ever constant...

As you may know, last week I reported that Wolf Radio shut down operations. Fortunately this was during my week off, so I wasn't left hanging right away. But the realization that I needed to find another station to call home was looming. Thanks to my friend Virus, he gave me the name of a station I could join so that I wouldn't need to worry about being left in the lurch. That was Best Hits Radio.

Tonight was my first...and last...show with that station. There were a lot of things that were involved in the decision to leave. A lot had to do with the alienation of my listeners, who mean EVERYTHING to me. The whole issue with the lack of proper chatroom, and the MANY issues my listeners had trying to register or login to the chatbox concerned me greatly. I had a conversation with the station manager earlier yesterday regarding issues I had with it. He said it was buggy with everyone, which didn't really give me a lot of confidence. But I plodded on with today. Now, me having issues with things is one matter...when it affects how the show goes for my audience...that's something altogether different. There were also a collection of other issues that made me somewhat suspect about my staying on with them. I will not go into them in this public forum. But suffice it to say I have communicated these issues to the station manager, and have told them that I am leaving Best Hits Radio, and wished them well.

Does this leave me without a place to do my radio shows? Fear not...for that solution has been found.

The former members of Wolf Radio, which was Fallen Sword Radio before that, have created a new entity: Endeavor Radio, named after the FS guild that many of the DJs on the station belong to - The Knights of Endeavor. And they have welcomed me back into the fold, as it were, and starting Thursday evening, I will be broadcasting from Endeavor Radio.

So Thursday night will be your night to stomp, and Monday night will still be the night for your retro fix...same bat-time, different bat-channel. But all is well. :)
