Things have changed... some of you may have noticed, my public Facebook profile was shut down a bit early...something that had to be done. I've spent the day switching the blog from the old email addy to my new one (not hard, just tedious!)...and I THINK I'm done...

More to come when it happens...

Upcoming event schedule (gettin' bizzay!) (UPDATED 10/01/12)

Yes...I wrote "bizzay"...though it's a safe bet I won't write it again...ever.

But yes, my DJ card is filling up rather quickly for the end of the year thus far...and I'm loving it! Gives me a chance to take my mind off of recent events (single-hood, my recent move and re-assembling my life, so to speak).

The links attached to the events are, naturally, the Facebook event listings:

OCTOBER 6 - Kollektiv in Lunenburg, NS  (no actual location announced yet...check the event for details!)

OCTOBER 18 - Sexy Black Party @ Menz & Mollyz, Halifax NS

OCTOBER 30 - Devil's Night-Kit's Wake @ The CoHo (Company House), Halifax NS

NOVEMBER 3 - Back To The 80s Dance Party @ MSVU (Vinnie's Pub)

NOVEMBER 10 - the event is cancelled...the date is now free...jus' sayin' ;)

That's about it right now...I'm available right up to New Year's (hint hint!)

Now that THAT'S out of the way...

The other thing I wanted to write about...the state of the radio shows.

As many of you know, I have relocated very recently to a new place, following the end of my relationship. I'm sill getting the housekeeping things out of the way and there's also the purchasing of new hardware (a.k.a. needing a new monitor). As of right now, space constraints are preventing me from setting up a proper "studio" like I had before. Until that time, the radio shows are on hiatus. And, I gotta say, it's killing me...I have SO much new music I want to share with you all, but right now, things are such that I am unable to. However, on the EBM/industrial front anyway, you can hear some of the new material at the event on the 30th of October (listed above).

As soon as I can get some space set aside to put things back together, I'll be back on the air...promise :)

That's all for now...

Changes... we are...

For the benefit of those who have not seen my recent post, this will bring you up to speed:

As many of you know, for a while, I had considered hanging up the headphones permanently next year...I had even thought about doing it this year. There were many people that thought this was a bad idea, some because they didn't want me to give up what I loved doing...and others because of the date I had chosen for my retirement: September 11th.

Now, when I started DJing back in 1987, 09/11 was just another day for everyone else. To me, it was the start of a path that I have followed these 25 years...but the negativity attached to that date simply didn't exist at that time. So when I had originally announced that 09/11/12 was going to be my retirement date, people had a lot to say. They weren't wrong...but they weren't looking at it from my POV. Regardless, the change that has happened was done the day before my actual anniversary, so that others that associate that date with an event that shocked the world wouldn't think that I was trying to compete, which was never my intention.

For many years, the name "Bludston" was synonymous with EBM/industrial in Halifax, and for a short time, in Kansas City and other parts of the Midwest US (well okay, two places). All throughout the time MasQ was running in the city, I wanted to expand my horizons, play outside my comfort something different. But I felt that because of my residency with that event was holding me back. It was one of the reasons I had started considering retiring from being a DJ. 2010 marked the beginning of changes in what I did, doing a dubstep event for Full Circle, and then Hal-Con 2010, an event I would do again the following year. It was in 2011 that I had decided "yes, this would be it...I'm one wants me involved...I hang up the phones for good." I had a conversation with a good friend of mine, and she had thought that maybe the Bludston name was the reason I was being "typecast," and that maybe I should change it, thinking that might actually help open things up for me. I brought that notion to the other person whose opinion I value the most (and still do!), and she said the same thing. It was also decided what name I would use...and both people thought it was the best idea.

And here we are, a year later, and many events behind me...2 Animaritime cons, the Fet Ball, several J-pop dances, and other electronic events...and as of last night, DJ Bludston is no more. Using my real last name makes this a little more personal than it used to "Bludston" was a persona I put on at industrial events, rather than it being me. But there's no reason why I can't just flip the switch and turn that side on for specific events.

Originally, I chose that name in 1999, as I started guest-spinning at Shadowplay...a lot has happened since then.

I must say, I've been anxious about hearing new A23, and Tom Shear does not disappoint. Before the promo became available through Metropolis, I had a chance, along with everyone else, to hear this album in its entirety on YouTube, as Tom uploaded the entire project as an experiment (which Espermachine has decided to employ to give fans a chance to hear his entire CD, "Dying Talk"...go check it out!). The advance track, "The Noise Inside My Head" got me excited, to be sure. Then, as each track of the album was released on YT, I listened, and the more I heard, the more I liked it. The album doesn't stick to one style, either...definitely showing his lack of fear of switching things up, as is seen in "Outsider," almost taking a more rock-like feel to the track. The album picks back up with "Darkflow" and stays pretty hard & steady, dropping into a synthpop-tinged track, "The Other Side Of The Wall." "Talk Me Down" brings the futurepop back in, before the first disc winds down with a rock-flavored downtempo track, "Otherness."

The limited edition variation of this album has a second disc, with seven remixes by Grendel, Cesium_137, iVardensphere, Daniel Meyer, Sonik Foundry, Alter Der Ruine and Tenek. It also contains three extra tracks. "Rain Falls Down" is a very cool downtempo track. The second track, "God Is A Strangely Absent Father," is a darker track, seemingly talking about unheard prayers, and a deity that does not listen to his followers...again, just what I'm getting out of it. The last track, "Reckless," is another great track, ending a great pair of discs. Well worth adding this to your collection.

It's been two years since "Aftermath" hit the clubs, and it's good to see another release from this outfit.

The moods on this album shift quite a lot...the music moves from club stompy to atmospheric and downtempo very nicely. "NightTerror," "Dark Odyssey," "It's You" and "Mescaline" are definitely club worthy. "Soultaker" features the unmistakable vocals of Claus Larsen of Leæther Strip...and it's a fantastic track. "The Devil You Know" is a great dark atmospheric track that could fit on a cyberpunk soundtrack. The final track, "Blade Runner Tribute," makes my inner geek giddy with excitement, as they pay tribute to Vangelis, with their rendition of the Main Titles score from Blade Runner, appropriately peppered with quotes & samples from the movie. All in all, a very solid release from Decoded Feedback...definitely worth having in the collection.

Scott Fox & co. have created some fantastic tracks as iVardensphere, and it hardly seems possible that anyone could improve upon the work they've already done...but this remix album does just that. A collection of remixes from their last two albums, "Bloodwater" and "APOK," this new compilation brings together some top-notch names to have a chance to create interpretations on iVardensphere's tracks. Artists like BlakOPZ, Encephalon, Caustic, Ludovico Technique, DYM, Unit:187 and Ad-ver-sary have a chance to make these tracks theirs, while still keeping the essence of the originals intact. There are some serious dance-floor gems in this collection, "Ancients (BlakOPZ Summon Remix)," "Sick (Phosgore Remix)," and "The Source of Uncertainty (The Hexensphere by HexRx)" to name a few. There are also some very atmospheric remixes here, the two that stand out most in my mind being "Chasing The Dragon (Comaduster Remix)" and "Ghostnote (Iszoloscope Remix). I was thoroughly impressed with this collection of remixes, and I'm pretty sure you will too.

That's all for now. I'll be playing tracks from these and a few more releases tomorrow night (06/14/12) on Dark Industry, starting at 7pm Atlantic / 5pm Central / 11pm GMT on Endeavor Radio (

A Solution to Piracy...?

I decided to start writing more blog posts that have to do with the music I play, rather than just posting playlists and the like...and here's the first one. :)

I can remember, back in the day, if someone was looking for new music, they'd record things from the radio, or they'd go to a friend's place and copy their cassettes, or in some cases, their vinyl or even CDs. Movies were a little harder to do, but could be done, and people were taping things from TV all the time. Pirating computer software was a little harder as the technology was a little more primitive, but it was still done. Fast forward to the internet age...and everything can be downloaded within minutes (seconds, if your internet connection is top-notch). Piracy has become much easier, and a much bigger problem than it was back in the day.

For the purposes of this post, I'm focusing on music (big surprise there!). Being a DJ, the music I play on my radio shows, particularly the EBM/industrial tracks I play, come from the promotional services of the labels and, in some cases, the artists themselves. We get this material with the conditional clause that it NEVER gets sent to illegal downloading sites for others to download as well. The artists put a great deal of effort into creating this material, and for their efforts to wind up on illegal sites...well, it's rather disheartening. And it happens far too often: just recently, Espermachine's new CD, "Dying Life," which was mastered through Tom (Assemblage 23) Shear's label 23db Records, was released in its digital form to the press only for reviewing...and it wound up, very quickly, on illegal downloading sites. This kind of thing has been happening far too often as of late, and it's discouraging and frustrating for the artists and album producers to discover that their hard work is available for anyone to download without paying for the work.

There's been plenty of talk on the subject as to how to combat the situation. Reporting the site or trying to have the offending site shut down is seemingly not the way to go, as when one is shut down, several more pop up to replace it. Asking to have the download links removed only works for a short period of time, as the link will appear on another site. Keeping track of them all can prove to be headache-making as well. But someone may have actually come up with an idea that might just work.

YouTube has become one of the most interesting and useful tools for music promotion over the last few years. At any given time, Facebook is littered with video postings of music tracks, potentially reaching millions of users, giving free promotion of music projects to a much broader audience. Recently, Tom Shear of Assemblage 23 hit upon the idea of using this to promote his new album, "Bruise," which comes out June 12th on Metropolis Records. He has uploaded the tracks for both CDs of the limited edition of the album to his YouTube channel for fans to preview. He's also employing the option of putting ads on the videos to generate a little revenue from the replaying of the videos. Having heard the double-CD package, it's well worth the money.

Is this a solution to regain some of the lost revenue caused by music piracy? We'll have to see, as Mr. Shear's experiment has only recently been launched. But here's hoping it helps.

In the meantime, Espermachine's album "Dying Life" is available on the Assemblage 23 store website, along with previews of the tracks.

ADDENDUM: every blog post should have a's what was playing while I wrote this:

New mixes on MixCloud

Well, as I've managed to re-arrange things in the computer room, I have my rig set up and jacked into my computer...which gives me the opportunity to record new mixes...something I haven't done in a dog's age!'s the first of two new mixes:

"D357R0Y" is a harsh EBM/rhythmic noise mix, much harder than my previous mixes...but it certainly felt good mixing it!

"prog://H0U53" is my first foray into progressive house. Defintely an experiment, to be sure...but it was a lot of fun!

So there you go...a couple of new mixes for you! There will be more forthcoming, rest assured :)

Okay...this is something that's been on my mind for a while now, but until recently I haven't bothered to vocalize it..well, put it to text, anyway. Until now. And this isn't a "oh poor me" whiny least it's not meant to be.

I feel I've become "typecast" as a DJ...I know the word "typecast" is more for actors who are chosen for the same kind of roles all the time, but I'm not sure what the word would be for a DJ.

I mean yes, for a good number of years I've been spinning goth/industrial/EBM and the like...but over the last bit I've done a couple of  dubstep events in the city, as well as having various styles of DJ mixes available (EBM/industrial, dubstep, electro house, trance)...and I've been wanting to branch out and get involved in many of the electronic dance events in the city, but I feel I'm not really being considered because of being "typecast" as only spinning one style, and that's it. I've discovered, through experimentation, that if it's got a beat, I can spin it...

I have a retirement date of 09/11/2013...mostly because things are not busy this time least three events I was hoping to do this year probably aren't happening for me, which doesn't really make me terribly cheery...and other events are not forthcoming for me, either.

Needless to say, the feeling that I've outlived my usefulness as a DJ gets stronger with each passing day...which saddens me, as DJing is my passion.
